Movie Monday: Would You Rather

"Would You Rather" The old game we've all played, but this film version the stakes are a bit higher. I found out about this film when I was browsing around Barns and Noble's New DVD releases. The catchy name and the synopsis caught my attention.

What would you do if a millionaire offered you a chance to solve all your life s problems? After the tragic death of her parents, Iris (Brittany Snow, Pitch Perfect) is desperate to make ends meet while caring for her terminally ill younger brother. When seemingly philanthropic aristocrat Shepard Lambrick (Jeffrey Combs, Re-Animator) expresses an interest in helping them by inviting her to an exclusive dinner party that offers the chance at untold riches, Iris finds herself in a group of similarly desperate individuals all looking to make some easy money...WOULD YOU RATHER is an edge of your seat horror thriller that invites you over for a quiet evening of murder.

I was hooked. These types of movies hooks me in like a free meal at Old Country Buffet.

The first half an hour was good. The set up to the movie was executed flawlessly, but after that, it just unravels. The movie becomes a combination of the movie Clue and Saw. It no longer kept me intrigued since the "dares" turned repetitive as it cycled through the players. As a seasoned horror/suspense film addict, I predicted the ending and nailed it.

I can't say the acting was great (aside from Jeffery Combs'). The main actress/heroine faded away as all her lines in the movie receded to screams, moans, and mascara running down her face.
You can't say your lines if your mouth is covering your face.
Did you ever see an actor/actress that made you wonder, "why isn't this person in more things?" Well that's how I feel about Jeffery Combs. He brings all his characters to life. I believe it's because of his unique voice. He has a good range, it can be meek like a muskrat to a commanding lion. Maybe that's why his credit has a lot of voice over work too.
But my favorite character of his, is Wayoun on Star Trek: DS9. He was a bad ass villain; annoying and he made you hate him!
Best gif that captures his subtle range of acting
Did you know he was in the Frighteners? I just put that puzzle together...That was a GREAT movie and he played a nightmarish creep.
Heebie jeebies...
Lastly, they left out the backbone of a story the "Why". Why this game? What was the meaning to the madness? If they explained it, I missed it.

I would recommend this movie if you really had no other scary/horror flick to watch. Or if you really like Jeffery Combs, which I did and I think he could have done better...
